Founded in 1874, the San Diego Society of Natural History is the oldest scientific institution in southern California.
The Research Library of the San Diego Natural History Museum is a complete natural history reference library, with greatest strengths in the historic research interests of the institution -- botany, entomology, geology, herpetology, ornithology, mammalogy, marine invertebrates, and paleontology. The collection includes both standard and obscure references, journals, rare books, and maps, a large collection of photographic prints and slides, the Klauber Herpetological Library, works of art on natural history subjects, and an archive of materials related to the Museum's history of scientific exploration and research.
